365 Movie Challenge:
11. Megan Is Missing, ★★★★★
I strongly feel the need to say this about this movie: Megan Is Missing…is the most shocking, disturbing, terrifying, heart breaking thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve seen some fucked up movies. I sat through A Serbian Film (which I’ve seen twice), The Human Centipede 1 (which I own on DVD) and 2, Audition…just, give me a list of fucked up movies and I’ve seen it.
But none of those movies have impacted me like this movie has. I don’t want to give too much away, because I didn’t know a lot about the movie when I watched it but to put it in simple terms: Megan (14) and Amy (13) are best friends living in an internet dominated world. Cell phones, webcams, all the electronic communicators. They’re living how we’re living right now…and as we are today, they’re exposed to strangers online.
I’m 17, and I’ve been using the internet since I was Megan and Amy’s age. Luckily, I’ve always been…smart when it comes to talking to people online. And as I’ve gotten older, I know the rights and wrongs. Today…pre-teens are all over the internet. They have myspace, facebook, hell, my 12 year old cousin has skype. And the thing is—which is obvious—it gets dangerous. These children are exposed things that are unsafe. And by that I mean internet predators.
And this is what Megan Is Missing is about.
This movie is very realistic; the most realistic portrayal I’ve ever seen. If you watch this, don’t spend your time criticizing the actors because that isn’t what the movie is about. Its about…how easily a child can be put in danger by an internet predator. Once again, I don’t want to give too much away, but in the movie, these kids are buck wild. Like, they’re 14 and 15, going out partying, getting shitfaced drunk and sucking dick. Now, I know there are some people who would say “14 year olds would never do this!” or “This is totally unrealistic!” or something along those lines.
This is what I have to say to those people: fuck you, you’re wrong.
My 12 year old cousin ‘gossips’ with me all the time about how her friends have boyfriends, her friends are always kissing boys and dropping the f-bomb. While I’m listening to her, I’m like “what the fuck son?” They’re 12! 12 years old! They’re not even 13, they are 12!
And as they get older, they get wilder. I know 14 year old girls who have already sex, are experienced with boys and get drunk. I am 17, still a virgin, have only kissed a boy once and I never go partying. What the fuck is going on these 14 year olds?
These kids think they’re so…mature that they can do anything. And that is what puts them in danger. And that is exactly why this movie impacted me the way it did.
Because we live in the world of this movie. But that’s obvious; its exactly what the movie is trying to say. Preteens are putting themselves in danger by talking to strangers online, but the parents are also to blame, a point that is also made in the movie.
I know I’m rambling, but this movie has left me…in complete shock. I wanted to turn the movie off so bad, just shut my computer down and never open it again. There’s parts in the movie where I literally thought my heart was going to rip from my chest because it was pounding so hard. 85% of the time, I was covering my face with my teddy bear.
That’s how effective this movie is. I don’t know how you guys react during shocking movies, but that’s how I reacted, because this movie hits close to home. Megan Is Missing is what’s going on right now, right now something like this movie is happening.
I honestly, strongly, truly believe that everyone needs to see this movie. Parents, definitely. Preteens…yes, this movie is very intense, very disturbing and I can completely understand why someone wouldn’t want their kid to see this. But this thing is: the stuff in the movie happens. It happens everyday, and that’s what makes the film all the more heart breaking, disturbing and realistic.
Because this can easily happen.
So…yeah, I gave this movie 5/5 stars because the reasons listed above. Its an extremely powerful movie. I’m in tears while I write this.
This is…this is the world we live in.
